Week Six Summary

Woo! With midterms coming up and spring break just around the corner my mind has been all over the place!

Radio Show Progress:

Thank goodness we had a bit of snow this week so I had some extra time on my hands to be able to get a quicker start than usual on my digital storytelling work. I was able to form an amazing radio show group thanks to twitter and communication! We have a group of six spectacular gals and our show is called Get A Clue! I am super excited and thanks to having an amazing group we really got this going this week. I am really pleased :) To learn more about our radio show, check out my progress post.

Radio Show Design Project:

We are going to have a segment in our radio show Get A Clue! called War of the Roses. I don’t want to give anything away just yet, but it will be awesome! I created a poster for this segment.

WaroftheRoses

Radio Listen-Along:

I tuned in to ds106radio on Monday evening! It was great to be snuggled up under a blanket listening to ds106radio while watching the snow fall. The radio show was also very interesting, but the femme fatales need to get it together haha

Assignments:

For one of my assignments this week, I decided to do the assignment, Based On 1-Quote-A-Day Project that was submitted by Rimi Morita. I decided to do this assignment because I have an obsession with quotes. I have them throughout my room, in my planner, on my pinterest boards, etc. If you haven’t noticed, at the end of each of my weekly summaries I include a quote. This week I included the quote “Treat Yo Self” because I feel that we all need to do that more often.

For one of my assignments this week, I decided to do the assignment, Favorite Song that was submitted by Alicia Almberg. I recorded my favorite song (without the lyrics) and uploaded it to soundcloud.

Comments:

I really enjoyed reading and seeing what my fellow ds106ers have been up to this week. Here are 10 comments that I made on different ds106ers blog posts:

Guess the Song!?!

For one of my assignments this week, I decided to do the assignment, Favorite Song that was submitted by Alicia Almberg.

The assignment is to,” Take your favorite song. Remove the lyrics. Play only up to thirty seconds of the song. Listener must be able to guess. ” The assignment is worth 1.5 points.

I recorded my favorite song (without the lyrics) and uploaded it to soundcloud.

I liked this assignment because I thought it would be cool to see people’s guesses. (It’s really not tricky)

Here is my favorite song! Take a guess and comment what you think it is! Enjoy :)

Treat Yo Self- DO IT!

For one of my assignments this week, I decided to do the assignment, Based On 1-Quote-A-Day Project that was submitted by Rimi Morita.

The assignment is to, “Read your quote for a day out loud, and record it! Do not forget to give an appropriate feeling to it. Tone of voice could be a helpful hint for answerers to guess where your quote came from. Mimicking the original tone could be nice enough, but you also can add your own feelings to it as well. :)” The assignment is worth 1.5 points.

If you’re having a bad week, treat yo self! Really just do it sometimes! You are worth it :)

I recorded myself reading the quote on soundcloud and uploaded it.

I loved this assignment! It was supa easy, but I really liked it!

Treat Yo Self! DO IT!

Let’s Get This Show on the Radio!

We are going to have a segment in our radio show Get A Clue! called War of the Roses. I don’t want to give anything away just yet, but it will be awesome! I created a poster for this segment.

I put the image that I found on PowerPoint and I added word art. I played around with the fonts until I found something that I liked. I really wanted something simple, but something that popped at the same time.

WaroftheRosesI am really happy with the outcome because I think that it is clean and it pops. I really like the poster and I hope that it will help promote the segment in our radio show.

It’s All About the Radio Show

I am super excited for this radio show! After listening to ds106 radio a couple of times I can’t wait for our show to air and our fellow ds106ers to tell us what they think!

I was able to form an amazing radio show group thanks to twitter and communication! We have a group of six spectacular gals and our show is called Get A Clue! The girls in my group are: Megan Rosengrant, Erin Clark, Tiffany Yowell, July Laszakovits, and Savanna Palmer. I am super excited and thanks to having an amazing group we really got this going this week. I am really pleased :)

Once we had our group finalized, I created a GoogleDoc and shared it with everyone. We have been using the GoogleDoc to communicate our ideas and such throughout the week. We each have our own color so it is easy to distinguish what each member is saying. We have also used twitter throughout the week to communicate. To be honest, twitter overwhelms me sometimes so I have had a hard time communicating that way. I have however loved communicating via Direct Messages on Twitter. This has been super helpful! Especially for quick individual questions!

So far we have 9 pages on our GoogleDoc. This consists of everything from ideas to characters to bumpers. If it pertains to our radio show, it’s on there. Get a Clue! is going to be awesome! I am excited :)

Our radio show is going to be a Clue murder mystery show. We also have some great commercial ads! I am really impressed with the creative minds of those in my group! They have thought of some pretty cool things! I was up for anything, but I am extremely happy with the outcome of my group’s progress.

We have gotten a lot of work done, but we still have work to do. We are hoping to meet in person sometime this week, but if that is not possible we will meet online at the same time. I am really excited for this radio show!

Week Five Summary

Wooh! What a week! This week has been incredibly busy! I guess that’s just how my semester is going to be considering I am taking 6 classes and I have a job. I guess I’ll accept the fact that this is how it is going to be.

I really enjoyed this week being a design week! :)

Assignments:

This week, we were assigned to read The Vignelli Canon by Massimo Vignelli. It is a design resource that was created by a graphic designer, Massimo Vignelli. I really like how Vignelli encompasses the elements of design and points out important facets of design and how things are portrayed or perceived by a viewer. Anyone can look at something, but two people may not see the same thing even though they are looking at the same thing. Vignelli talks about a lot of key design points. I guess I never really even realized how important grids are until I read The Vignelli Canon. Vignelli talks about the importance of paper size and grids, two things I never would have thought would be a big deal, but when it comes to design, they are. Those two elements (paper size and grids) can completely change something. Typography comes into play along with these two elements. In one of my education classes, we talked a lot about the importance of typography and now that is something that I usually pay attention to. It amazes me how much it matters and how much it can change something.  I really liked how Vignelli talked about the importance of the layout of something. Vignelli got me thinking about how many elements go into design and how important each and every one are in order to design something. Design is a process. All of the components come together in order to design something. Creativity is definitely a VERY important aspect of design and I can’t wait to get creative in my own design work! This week, we could pick between three films to watch. I chose to watch the Coen Brother’s The Big Lebowski (1997). In terms of noir, there are definitely elements of noir embedded into the film. I think that a lot of the art that was in the movie whether it was throughout the setting or Lebowski’s daughters art, it had some elements of noir in it. I also think that there were elements of noir in the way the movie was filmed and in some aspects of lighting. The lighting changes several times throughout the movie and at night in particular, there are definite elements of noir. I think that Lebowski’s daughter is definitely the “femme fatale” of the film. There are evident elements of noir in this film, so even though I didn’t necessarily like the movie, I was able to see elements of noir in it. Click here to view the post.

For my DesignBlitz, I decided to take a trip to Downtown Fredericksburg because I knew that I would find TONS of elements of design down there. Even though it is absolutely freezing (I hate the cold), it was worth it!

For one of my week five assignments, I chose to do the assignment, Website Banner that was submitted by Meredith Fierro. I picked this assignment because I thought it would be cool to make a banner for my website. It needs something! I decided to include pictures from a lot of my trips! I include some from when I lived in Israel, visited Canada with one of my best friends, nannied in St. Thomas and the British Virgin Islands, spent some time at Wintergreen, took a trip to Charleston, South Carolina, and hiked at Humpback Rock in Charlottesville. This banner tells a little bit about me and what I like. I love to travel! I think that it will add to my website :)

For one of my week five assignments, I chose to do the assignment, Laptop Lingo that was submitted by Lauren Brumfield. I picked this assignment because my laptop is basically my best friend. We have been through a lot together and we are always together whether we like it or not! HAHA! Right now, my laptop has a purple speck case on it which is covered in stickers that explain a bit about me and what I like. I have considered ordering a personalized SkinIT for my computer before, so I thought this would be a fun assignment to do! Who knows? Maybe I’ll end up ordering the skin! I am a very indecisive person so I knew I could not just pick one picture or one thing for my laptop skin. I am obsessed with pictures, especially pictures with people because they bring back memories! I love remembering time spent with special people in my life. I chose to do a collage of pictures with family and friends. Here is the laptop skin!

For one of my week five assignments, I chose to do the assignment, Apps Galore that was submitted by Nicky Memita. I picked this assignment because I thought it would be fun to give my character dossier, Shirley Mayfield, a home screen of her own. Shirley is surely going to be technologically savvy! I thought that it would be fun to compile a list of apps that Shirley Mayfield would use in her everyday life. I described why I put each app on her phone in my post.

For one of my week five assignments, I chose to do the assignment, Create Your Own Business Card that was submitted by Lauren Brumfield. I picked this assignment because I thought it would be fun to give my character dossier, Shirley Mayfield her own business card. I think that it will definitely make her seem more professional since she took over the department store after her father’s death. Shirley will definitely be bringing in the business with these sleek business cards ;)

For one of my week five assignments, I chose to do the assignment, Word that was submitted by Rabia Aman. I picked this assignment because I thought it would be really cool to manipulate a word in a cool way. I wanted to do this assignment and dedicate it to the 6 stars we had to do for our character dossier this week. When I was thinking of words to do, I was thinking of a lot, but I narrowed it down to one word: Mayfield. I picked Mayfield because not only is Shirley’s last name Mayfield, but it is also the name of their family’s department store. I think that it has a lot of meaning for my character.

This week, we had to review and reflect on several resources relating to copyright and the creative commons initiative that has sprung up as a response to copyright law.

We were assigned to do the following things:

After reading and watching these resources, I have gained a bit more knowledge in terms of copyright and the creative commons initiative. It is SO important to give credit to people. Click here to view my post.

The Daily Creates:

The daily create assignment for 2-11-15 was to show your super power in a photo. I would definitely be super girl and I would have my sidekick wonder woman by my side!

Super Girl

The daily create assignment for 2-12-15 was to make your own family tree. I decided to draw mine out! Here is my family tree!

A creative family tree

The daily create assignment for 2-15-15 was to make jewelry out of real food. I decided to make a pretzel necklace! Here it is modeled by my lovely roommate!

Fair use gives permission to use someone’s work if cited and if given permission. Don’t steal someone else’s creativity. It is important to recognize someone for their own work. If you got an idea from them, you should still cite it. Citing is very important. You should recognize what someone has done and what they have contributed to our culture.

In reviewing these resources, I have learned that I have broken the copyright law multiple times and I am certainly hoping that I will be WAY more aware of copyright after reviewing these resources. I am really going to try and be more careful about what I use from the internet.

I was absolutely obsessed with the Fair(y) Use Tale Video because I am obsessed with Disney. It really put into perspective how serious copyright is. I really did learn a lot from these resources. There is a lot I didn’t know, but there is also a lot that I did. I guess it reinforces the fact that I need to be more aware of what I am using from the Internet and how to be careful with my own work having limitations on it.

Mayfield

For one of my week five assignments, I chose to do the assignment, Word that was submitted by Rabia Aman.

The assignment is to, “Pick one word. Select one single typeface, and communicate your word. Do not use colors or any other graphical elements. The goal is to select a type face that represents the meaning of the word, and if needed manipulate the font using different sizes, bold, italics, counterform (spacing) etc to visualize the word.” The assignment is worth 2 points.

I used Microsoft Word to create my word. I used WordArt. I created each letter individually and then rotated them the way that I wanted them.

I really enjoyed doing this assignment! Manipulating the letters was really fun!

Shirley is Bringing in the Business

For one of my week five assignments, I chose to do the assignment, Create Your Own Business Card that was submitted by Lauren Brumfield.

The assignment is to,” create your own business card to advertise who you are.” The assignment is worth 2 points.

I picked this assignment because I thought it would be fun to give my character dossier, Shirley Mayfield her own business card. I think that it will definitely make her seem more professional since she took over the department store after her father’s death.

I used VistaPrint to create the business card. I wanted something sleek but stylish at the same time. I also wanted to keep things simple because if there is too much going on it’s more difficult to read. I think that I ended up designing a very “clean” business card. It has all of the necessary aspects, but it’s not “too much” in my opinion.

Shirley will definitely be bringing in the business with these sleek business cards ;)

I really enjoyed completing this assignment because I really enjoy bringing Shirley to life! It really makes her seem real. I also liked getting a chance to play around with business cards because that is something that I will probably need in the future.

Downtown Design

For my DesignBlitz, I decided to take a trip to Downtown Fredericksburg because I knew that I would find TONS of elements of design down there. Even though it is absolutely freezing (I hate the cold), it was worth it! I really enjoyed going downtown and looking around. Now I can’t wait for warmer weather!

Typography

Typography

I think that this sign has elements of typography because the word “ARTS” is in a different font and definitely makes the sign “pop”. The word “ARTS” is also in different colors which makes the sign pop as well. I didn’t know that Fredericksburg had a center for the creative arts until I did some exploring, so that is something I would definitely be interested in checking out.

Proportion

Proportion

There are a lot of murals in downtown Richmond (where I am from) so seeing a mural on the bricks in downtown Fredericksburg really made me happy. I really like murals and I think that they give purpose to a building. They definitely give a building more character. This mural reminded me of proportion. It is designed in a way that makes you feel like you are standing there looking out in Fredericksburg. I really like this mural!

Minimalism

Minimalism

I think that these signs contain elements of minimalism because they are explaining that there is a “bike shop” using only words. There are no pictures of bicycles. The signs are very straight forward. I really like these signs because even though they are simple, they have cool colors and fonts which means they also contain elements of color and typography when it comes to design.

Color

Color

I absolutely love these chairs! They are SO me. I love the cool design and colors. I think that these chairs have many elements of design in them. I think that they are very creative, but the main element that I saw when I saw the chairs was color. If it wasn’t so cold, I would have sat on them! It’s something to do when the weather gets warmer, they are right in front of the water so it would be a great view!
