Wooh! What a week! This week has been incredibly busy! I guess that’s just how my semester is going to be considering I am taking 6 classes and I have a job. I guess I’ll accept the fact that this is how it is going to be.
I really enjoyed this week being a design week!
This week, we were assigned to read The Vignelli Canon by Massimo Vignelli. It is a design resource that was created by a graphic designer, Massimo Vignelli. I really like how Vignelli encompasses the elements of design and points out important facets of design and how things are portrayed or perceived by a viewer. Anyone can look at something, but two people may not see the same thing even though they are looking at the same thing. Vignelli talks about a lot of key design points. I guess I never really even realized how important grids are until I read The Vignelli Canon. Vignelli talks about the importance of paper size and grids, two things I never would have thought would be a big deal, but when it comes to design, they are. Those two elements (paper size and grids) can completely change something. Typography comes into play along with these two elements. In one of my education classes, we talked a lot about the importance of typography and now that is something that I usually pay attention to. It amazes me how much it matters and how much it can change something. I really liked how Vignelli talked about the importance of the layout of something. Vignelli got me thinking about how many elements go into design and how important each and every one are in order to design something. Design is a process. All of the components come together in order to design something. Creativity is definitely a VERY important aspect of design and I can’t wait to get creative in my own design work! This week, we could pick between three films to watch. I chose to watch the Coen Brother’s The Big Lebowski (1997). In terms of noir, there are definitely elements of noir embedded into the film. I think that a lot of the art that was in the movie whether it was throughout the setting or Lebowski’s daughters art, it had some elements of noir in it. I also think that there were elements of noir in the way the movie was filmed and in some aspects of lighting. The lighting changes several times throughout the movie and at night in particular, there are definite elements of noir. I think that Lebowski’s daughter is definitely the “femme fatale” of the film. There are evident elements of noir in this film, so even though I didn’t necessarily like the movie, I was able to see elements of noir in it. Click here to view the post.
For my DesignBlitz, I decided to take a trip to Downtown Fredericksburg because I knew that I would find TONS of elements of design down there. Even though it is absolutely freezing (I hate the cold), it was worth it!
For one of my week five assignments, I chose to do the assignment, Website Banner that was submitted by Meredith Fierro. I picked this assignment because I thought it would be cool to make a banner for my website. It needs something! I decided to include pictures from a lot of my trips! I include some from when I lived in Israel, visited Canada with one of my best friends, nannied in St. Thomas and the British Virgin Islands, spent some time at Wintergreen, took a trip to Charleston, South Carolina, and hiked at Humpback Rock in Charlottesville. This banner tells a little bit about me and what I like. I love to travel! I think that it will add to my website
For one of my week five assignments, I chose to do the assignment, Laptop Lingo that was submitted by Lauren Brumfield. I picked this assignment because my laptop is basically my best friend. We have been through a lot together and we are always together whether we like it or not! HAHA! Right now, my laptop has a purple speck case on it which is covered in stickers that explain a bit about me and what I like. I have considered ordering a personalized SkinIT for my computer before, so I thought this would be a fun assignment to do! Who knows? Maybe I’ll end up ordering the skin! I am a very indecisive person so I knew I could not just pick one picture or one thing for my laptop skin. I am obsessed with pictures, especially pictures with people because they bring back memories! I love remembering time spent with special people in my life. I chose to do a collage of pictures with family and friends. Here is the laptop skin!
For one of my week five assignments, I chose to do the assignment, Apps Galore that was submitted by Nicky Memita. I picked this assignment because I thought it would be fun to give my character dossier, Shirley Mayfield, a home screen of her own. Shirley is surely going to be technologically savvy! I thought that it would be fun to compile a list of apps that Shirley Mayfield would use in her everyday life. I described why I put each app on her phone in my post.
For one of my week five assignments, I chose to do the assignment, Create Your Own Business Card that was submitted by Lauren Brumfield. I picked this assignment because I thought it would be fun to give my character dossier, Shirley Mayfield her own business card. I think that it will definitely make her seem more professional since she took over the department store after her father’s death. Shirley will definitely be bringing in the business with these sleek business cards
For one of my week five assignments, I chose to do the assignment, Word that was submitted by Rabia Aman. I picked this assignment because I thought it would be really cool to manipulate a word in a cool way. I wanted to do this assignment and dedicate it to the 6 stars we had to do for our character dossier this week. When I was thinking of words to do, I was thinking of a lot, but I narrowed it down to one word: Mayfield. I picked Mayfield because not only is Shirley’s last name Mayfield, but it is also the name of their family’s department store. I think that it has a lot of meaning for my character.
This week, we had to review and reflect on several resources relating to copyright and the creative commons initiative that has sprung up as a response to copyright law.
We were assigned to do the following things:
After reading and watching these resources, I have gained a bit more knowledge in terms of copyright and the creative commons initiative. It is SO important to give credit to people. Click here to view my post.
