Week Eleven Summary

Life has been throwing me some MAJOR curveballs lately and I have been trying to balance life and school and I do have to say, it’s difficult. I have to say thank you to my agency partners, Erin, Megan, and Tiffany. They are absolutely fabulous and SUPER understanding!

We have been chatting on Facebook ever since we set up our agency. This works of us! We learned that during our radio show. Erin set up a GoogleDoc which I am obsessed with because we can all put our ideas in one place and leave feedback to each other. Megan set up our agency’s website. The three of them have done an amazing job with setting this up since I have had a lot going on. I contributed to the website as well. :) Check it out! Hit us up! The web address is: the1agency.wordpress.com and the title of the website is Hit Me.

I am SUPER excited to be working with these fabulous ladies again!

Assignments:

For one of my assignments this week I decided to do the assignment, Character Resume, that was submitted by Nicky Memita.

The assignment is to, “Using either Microsoft Word, creating your own webpage, or using a website like LinkedIn, create a “fake” resume for a fictional person or character of your choice. Add detailed descriptions and make the resume relevant to the character. Resume must include a profile, work history, education, and skills. Locations, job positions, and companies can be made up! Use your creativity!” This assignment is worth 3 points.

I don’t need a resume to impress someone, but it definitely helps ;)

I created my resume on a Word Document then saved it as a PDF and took a screenshot and saved that as a JPEG. Once I saved everything, I uploaded the resume to flickr.

Shirley Mayfield's Resume

I also uploaded my resume to my agency’s website! Check us out! Hit us up!

For one of my assignments this week, I decided to do the assignment, You’re a Pinteresting Character, that was submitted by Brooke P.

The assignment is to, “Build a Pinterest page of at least 20 pins for a character of your choice. Search for pins that relate to your character and things that he or she would want to pin for themselves. Bonus points if you build a page and have visitors to your blog guess which character you picked!” This assignment is worth 2 points.

I was super excited to do this assignment because I am obsessed with Pinterest. It’s bad! I have SO many pins! I knew I would have fun with this one, so I started by logging onto Pinterest.

I had a TON of fun finding things that I loved! This wasn’t too hard because I am obsessed with a lot!

I created a board on my Pinterest called: Shirley is surely pinteresting ;)

For one of my assignments this week, I chose to do the assignment Create Your Dream Vacation on Pinterest, that was submitted by Haley Eckhardt.

The assignment is to,” Create A Pinterest Board Of Your Dream Vacation This is an assignment for dreamers! If you don’t already have a Pinterest account, create one! Next, take a moment and contemplate where you would want to go. A vacation does not necessarily mean you have to select one place to travel to. It can involve a variety of locations. Start off by creating a “board” for your dream vacation. All you have to do to create your board is click the “create a board” option on your main profile page. You could title it “My Dream Vacation,” like I did, or come up with something more personalized. You can select a category, such as “travel,” if you want, but neither a category, nor a description, are necessary to continue. Next, try plugging keywords into the search box on Pinterest for cities, countries, specific landmarks, attractions, etc. and “pin” your favorite images/travel blog links/recipes/etc. onto your new board! To pin, hover your mouse over the image and a red “Pin it” button will pop up in the top left corner. Go ahead and click on it. **The purpose of these pins is to give Pinterest subscribers access to a variety of recipes, photography, travel guides, blogs, literally EVERYTHING digital. Next, Pinterest will ask you which board you would like to pin it to. Make sure you select the board you created for this assignment. You can either keep the description the pin came with, or create your own! Completely up to you. And lastly, just click the red button again, and you will have successfully added your first pin! Congratulations! Keep searching and adding pins until you have developed a solid amount of things to do/see/eat on your dream vacation! Next, embed a link of your “Dream Vacation” Pinterest board in to a blog post and write out a brief summary of the trip you desire. It’s up to you what you want to write about, but some ideas would be:

– Talk about if you feel like this trip will be possible for you someday, why or why not?

– What is required for your dream vacation to come true? (Don’t just say money, do your research.)

– Do the place(s) you plan to go have a different native language? If it’s an exotic trip, are there legal requirements, such as shots, visas, etc.?

Really get to know your dream vacation– maybe it’ll happen someday!” This assignment is worth 3 points.

I have an obsession with Pinterest, I love Pinterest. I have over 10,000 pins. When I saw that there was an assignment having to do with Pinterest, I quickly got started. I also LOVE vacations, especially planning them. I am so glad that Haley E. submitted this assignment. It has been a dream of mine to go to Bora Bora, Tahiti. I absolutely LOVE tropical vacations. Bora Bora is exceptionally gorgeous. The water is perfect and everything is beautiful.

For one of my week five assignments, I chose to do the assignment, Create Your Own Business Card that was submitted by Lauren Brumfield.

The assignment is to,” create your own business card to advertise who you are.” The assignment is worth 2 points.

I picked this assignment because I thought it would be fun to make my own business card for my position in my agency, Hit Me.

I used VistaPrint to create the business card. I wanted something sleek but stylish at the same time. I also wanted to keep things simple because if there is too much going on it’s more difficult to read. I think that I ended up designing a very “clean” business card. It has all of the necessary aspects, but it’s not “too much” in my opinion.

Screenshot 2015-04-05 14.54.41

Shirley will definitely be bringing in the business with these sleek business cards ;)

Week Ten Summary

I was surely overwhelmed this week. I feel like that’s just how this semester will continue to be. Here’s what was completed this week:

Assignments:

For one of my assignments this week, I chose to do the assignment, A word…a picture…a story, that was submitted by Kierra Morris.

The assignment is to, “Chose up to 5-10 words..just randomly pick them don’t over think it just chose these words out of the blue. Then do a Google image search on these images and chose one of the first visible photos for the word..after you have chosen your words and your images put them together in video form and tell a story..include a sentence with each image to help guide your story or try and tell it without the sentences.” This assignment is worth 3 points.

Here is the story:

Piglets wear dresses that sparkle in the sun. They walk on floors of marble and sloppily drink their coffee. At night, they snuggle under blankets. In the morning, they look in the mirror and admire the curls of their tails and then snuggle up with a good book!

For one of my assignments this week, I chose to do the assignment, This is my story, that was submitted by Seong Cho.

The assignment is to, “Tell a short story using flashcard and record yourself. It can be something funny, sad, or just even express how your day was.” This assignment is worth 3 points.

I chose to do this assignment so that you all could learn a bit more about Mayfield’s. I don’t know why the words aren’t flipped, technical difficulties. Once I recorded it, I uploaded it to vimeo. Enjoy!

The Daily Creates:

The daily create assignment for Monday 3-23-2015 was to take a breakfast selfie.

Breakfast selfie

The daily create assignment for Wednesday 3-25-15 was to make an inspirational poster. The twist: the words of wisdom on it have to be something that *you* have said.

I decided to make my inspirational poster about a person who inspires me and a quote I say!

Your own words of wisdom inspirational poster

The daily create assignment for Thursday 3-26-2015 was to make some tree art.

Palm trees are my favorite, so I decided to make some (palm) tree art using patterns!

(Palm) tree art!

Organizing:

I can’t believe we are already starting the final unit of ds106. This semester has been a tough one, but it has flown by just like all the other semesters. I chose to work in a small group for the final until. I chose to work with a few of amazing gals who I worked with for our radio show, Tiffany Yowell, Erin Clark, and Megan Rosengrant. I am very excited to work with these creative ladies!

Week Nine Summary

This week we started video which honestly scares me more than audio does. As time goes on in s106, I am jumping more and more outside of my comfort zone. I am enjoying it, but it also scares me.

The Noir Buzz:

After my show aired on ds106 radio on Tuesday night, I was lucky enough to be able to listen to Vixen’s Ventures. I wish that I didn’t have to work so much so I would have been able to tune into ds106 radio a lot more, but unfortunately I had a busy work schedule this week. Luckily I was able to tune in on Tuesday night after my night class! It still amazes me how much talent and creativity my fellow ds106ers have! Keep up the great work y’all!

I was lucky enough to tune into Vixen’s Ventures and I am so glad I did!

Finally…Get A Clue!:

First off I want to thank my awesome group members! These gals are awesome and I am so proud of what we put together without even meeting, well Erin and I met, but other than that we never met as a group. I am SO proud of y’all. I think we did an awesome job! Listening to our show live was really cool! I was overwhelmed by all of the nice comments on twitter by our fellow ds106ers and professors. I was definitely humbled by the professors commentary when Erin went on Skype after our show aired. When I listened to our show for the first time I was like WOW this is awesome, but hearing it live was even better! Such a cool experience!

Assignments:

This week we were assigned to read Roger Ebert’s “How to Read a Movie” as well as watch three videos of our choosing (from a list). I chose to watch The Shining-ZoomsCamera Angle and Techniques, and Examples of Editing Techniques. Click here to check out the rest of my post!

For one of my assignments this week I chose to do the assignment, Special Person Montage, that was submitted by Travis Peed.

The assignment is to, ” to decide on who is special to you. It could be a relative, sibling, parent, friend, mentor, celebrity, or anyone. Then you are to make a video of images or video clips of them showing all the different things that they do that makes them special to you. Add music, animation, transition, anything to make the video. In your write-up be sure to explain why the person is special to you.” This assignment is worth 5 points.

I chose to do this assignment because I love honoring the special people in my life and it looked fun. It was a lot of fun! I went and searched through photos and then made them into a video using animato. Once I was done, I uploaded it to vimeo.

I chose my mother because she is not only my mother, but she is my best friend. She means so much to me and I am so thankful to have her. She is an incredible woman who I look up to and learn from each and everyday. My mom is so special to me. She is always there for me as well as so many other people. She puts everyone else before her and it truly makes me smile. She is an amazing, amazing woman.

This week I chose to do the assignment, Character Description, that was submitted by Katie Barnes.

The assignment is to,”Create a short about a minute thirty to two minute video describing a character.” This assignment is worth 4 points.

I chose to do this assignment because at this point I am straight up obsessed with my character dossier Shirley Mayfield. I thought that I would enjoy doing this assignment and I did! I had a difficult time with this assignment, but I think I am happy with the overall outcome. I uploaded it to vimeo!

The Daily Creates:

The daily create assignment for 3-19-2105 was to take a photograph with an artistic blur.

Week Eight Summary

The Noir Buzz:

Fortunately, but unfortunately I have a job so it has been hard to tune-in to all of the radio shows. I would absolutely love to listen to all of them, but with work, I can’t. Luckily, I was able to tune-in to the radio show NOIR not the father on Thursday evening. I hope that I am able to listen to a lot more this week because hearing that one made me realize how much talent and creativity my fellow ds106ers have. I know that everyone did a phenomenal job! I commend you all for that!

I was lucky enough to tune-in to NOIR not the father and I am SO glad that I did! A lot of people tuned in to this show because twitter was popping haha.

Assignments:

For one of my assignments this week, Erin Clark and I decided to do the assignment, Who Called? that was submitted by Demi Fulcher.

I collaborated with a fellow ds106er Erin Clark to complete this assignment! Erin and I met when we worked on our radio show together and our characters have a lot in common so it wasn’t hard to collaborate.

The assignment is to, “Record you self making a phone call as if you were a character off of the wire. The phone call has to be to another character from the wire. You can even make it a three way or four way call. You phone call can even be a voicemail as if someone didn’t pick up. Cutomize it as much as you like! The phone call has to be at least 2 minutes.” The assignment is worth 4 points.

Erin and I decided to make our characters friends while planning our radio show. Veronica and Shirley have a lot in common. They share a lot of the same interests. We wanted to keep their friendship going so we decided to collaborate.

Veronica left a message to Shirley first! This is her message:

In response to Veronica’s message, I recorded myself (as Shirley) on Audacity and then saved it as a WAV file. Once I saved it, I uploaded it to SoundCloud.

Here is Shirley’s message to Veronica:

I really liked this assignment because not only was I able to collaborate with a fellow ds106er which was awesome, but I also got to dig even deeper into my character’s life and I am really enjoying building off of Shirley’s life!

I was super excited to do this assignment because I am obsessed with Pinterest. It’s bad! I have SO many pins! I knew I would have fun with this one, so I started by logging onto Pinterest.

I decided to choose a character that a lovely fellow ds106er created! Try and figure out who the character is :)

The Daily Creates:

The Daily Create Assignment for Tuesday 3-10-2015 was to show different sides of yourself and put them into a photo collage.

I used pic stitch to put two photos together. I used a picture of my front side and one of my back side so I think I took the assignment literally, but I have enjoyed seeing fellow ds106ers creations!

My different sides

The Daily Create Assignment for Wednesday 3-11-2015 was to reflect on your favorite moment in the past week and make an abstract sketch to illustrate it.

My favorite moment in the past week was when my co-workers and I went to dinner after work during my spring break. It was great being able to catch up with them because I really miss spending time with them when I am at school.

As you can probably tell, I am not very good at drawing, but I can do stick figures! haha! Here is my attempt:

My favorite moment in the past week: catching up with my co-workers at dinner

The Daily Create assignment for today was to create a lesson and upload it to flickr.

I made hard-boiled eggs for dinner and my roommates and I all seem to forget how to boil eggs properly every time we go to do it, so I created a lesson for us!

Create a lesson! How to hard-boil eggs

Week Six Summary

Woo! With midterms coming up and spring break just around the corner my mind has been all over the place!

Radio Show Progress:

Thank goodness we had a bit of snow this week so I had some extra time on my hands to be able to get a quicker start than usual on my digital storytelling work. I was able to form an amazing radio show group thanks to twitter and communication! We have a group of six spectacular gals and our show is called Get A Clue! I am super excited and thanks to having an amazing group we really got this going this week. I am really pleased :) To learn more about our radio show, check out my progress post.

Radio Show Design Project:

We are going to have a segment in our radio show Get A Clue! called War of the Roses. I don’t want to give anything away just yet, but it will be awesome! I created a poster for this segment.

WaroftheRoses

Radio Listen-Along:

I tuned in to ds106radio on Monday evening! It was great to be snuggled up under a blanket listening to ds106radio while watching the snow fall. The radio show was also very interesting, but the femme fatales need to get it together haha

Assignments:

For one of my assignments this week, I decided to do the assignment, Based On 1-Quote-A-Day Project that was submitted by Rimi Morita. I decided to do this assignment because I have an obsession with quotes. I have them throughout my room, in my planner, on my pinterest boards, etc. If you haven’t noticed, at the end of each of my weekly summaries I include a quote. This week I included the quote “Treat Yo Self” because I feel that we all need to do that more often.

For one of my assignments this week, I decided to do the assignment, Favorite Song that was submitted by Alicia Almberg. I recorded my favorite song (without the lyrics) and uploaded it to soundcloud.

Week Five Summary

Wooh! What a week! This week has been incredibly busy! I guess that’s just how my semester is going to be considering I am taking 6 classes and I have a job. I guess I’ll accept the fact that this is how it is going to be.

I really enjoyed this week being a design week! :)

Assignments:

This week, we were assigned to read The Vignelli Canon by Massimo Vignelli. It is a design resource that was created by a graphic designer, Massimo Vignelli. I really like how Vignelli encompasses the elements of design and points out important facets of design and how things are portrayed or perceived by a viewer. Anyone can look at something, but two people may not see the same thing even though they are looking at the same thing. Vignelli talks about a lot of key design points. I guess I never really even realized how important grids are until I read The Vignelli Canon. Vignelli talks about the importance of paper size and grids, two things I never would have thought would be a big deal, but when it comes to design, they are. Those two elements (paper size and grids) can completely change something. Typography comes into play along with these two elements. In one of my education classes, we talked a lot about the importance of typography and now that is something that I usually pay attention to. It amazes me how much it matters and how much it can change something.  I really liked how Vignelli talked about the importance of the layout of something. Vignelli got me thinking about how many elements go into design and how important each and every one are in order to design something. Design is a process. All of the components come together in order to design something. Creativity is definitely a VERY important aspect of design and I can’t wait to get creative in my own design work! Click here to view the post.

This week, we could pick between three films to watch. I chose to watch the Coen Brother’s The Big Lebowski (1997). In terms of noir, there are definitely elements of noir embedded into the film. I think that a lot of the art that was in the movie whether it was throughout the setting or Lebowski’s daughters art, it had some elements of noir in it. I also think that there were elements of noir in the way the movie was filmed and in some aspects of lighting. The lighting changes several times throughout the movie and at night in particular, there are definite elements of noir. I think that Lebowski’s daughter is definitely the “femme fatale” of the film. There are evident elements of noir in this film, so even though I didn’t necessarily like the movie, I was able to see elements of noir in it. Click here to view the post.

For my DesignBlitz, I decided to take a trip to Downtown Fredericksburg because I knew that I would find TONS of elements of design down there. Even though it is absolutely freezing (I hate the cold), it was worth it!

For one of my week five assignments, I chose to do the assignment, Website Banner that was submitted by Meredith Fierro. I picked this assignment because I thought it would be cool to make a banner for my website. It needs something! I decided to include pictures from a lot of my trips! I include some from when I lived in Israel, visited Canada with one of my best friends, nannied in St. Thomas and the British Virgin Islands, spent some time at Wintergreen, took a trip to Charleston, South Carolina, and hiked at Humpback Rock in Charlottesville. This banner tells a little bit about me and what I like. I love to travel! I think that it will add to my website :)

For one of my week five assignments, I chose to do the assignment, Laptop Lingo that was submitted by Lauren Brumfield. I picked this assignment because my laptop is basically my best friend. We have been through a lot together and we are always together whether we like it or not! HAHA! Right now, my laptop has a purple speck case on it which is covered in stickers that explain a bit about me and what I like. I have considered ordering a personalized SkinIT for my computer before, so I thought this would be a fun assignment to do! Who knows? Maybe I’ll end up ordering the skin! I am a very indecisive person so I knew I could not just pick one picture or one thing for my laptop skin. I am obsessed with pictures, especially pictures with people because they bring back memories! I love remembering time spent with special people in my life. I chose to do a collage of pictures with family and friends. Here is the laptop skin!

For one of my week five assignments, I chose to do the assignment, Apps Galore that was submitted by Nicky Memita. I picked this assignment because I thought it would be fun to give my character dossier, Shirley Mayfield, a home screen of her own. Shirley is surely going to be technologically savvy! I thought that it would be fun to compile a list of apps that Shirley Mayfield would use in her everyday life. I described why I put each app on her phone in my post.

For one of my week five assignments, I chose to do the assignment, Create Your Own Business Card that was submitted by Lauren Brumfield. I picked this assignment because I thought it would be fun to give my character dossier, Shirley Mayfield her own business card. I think that it will definitely make her seem more professional since she took over the department store after her father’s death. Shirley will definitely be bringing in the business with these sleek business cards ;)

For one of my week five assignments, I chose to do the assignment, Word that was submitted by Rabia Aman. I picked this assignment because I thought it would be really cool to manipulate a word in a cool way. I wanted to do this assignment and dedicate it to the 6 stars we had to do for our character dossier this week. When I was thinking of words to do, I was thinking of a lot, but I narrowed it down to one word: Mayfield. I picked Mayfield because not only is Shirley’s last name Mayfield, but it is also the name of their family’s department store. I think that it has a lot of meaning for my character.

This week, we had to review and reflect on several resources relating to copyright and the creative commons initiative that has sprung up as a response to copyright law.

We were assigned to do the following things:

After reading and watching these resources, I have gained a bit more knowledge in terms of copyright and the creative commons initiative. It is SO important to give credit to people. Click here to view my post.

The Daily Creates:

The daily create assignment for 2-11-15 was to show your super power in a photo. I would definitely be super girl and I would have my sidekick wonder woman by my side!

Week Four Summary

This week has been a pretty horrible week for me. I was extremely sick (and I am never sick, so I was not a happy camper) which made it very hard for me to get any of my work done this week, especially my ds106 work. Luckily, I was able to tune into ds106 radio towards the end of the week even though that was still a struggle. I am still under the weather, so I wasn’t able to give this week my all. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to finish all of my assignments, but I should have a radio bumper coming soon!

I am really curious to know what Professor Burtis was hiding from on Wednesday when she did her video.

Assignments:

I reflected on audio this week by reading, watching, and listening to different resources. I will definitely continue to utilize the Audio Resource page throughout the semester because there are some really helpful tips and I learned a lot from this page! I watched Touch of Evil Opening Shot and Orson Welles- Touch of Evil (1958) opening. When I watched Touch of Evil Opening Shot, the music and sounds were very intense, but the mood was very light because the music was very upbeat. The whole video was going smoothly and everyone was happy until the last five seconds when something really dramatic happened. It was very much so a touch of evil. After watching Orson Welles- Touch of Evil (1958) opening I realized how much sound effects and audio change something. The music was so upbeat that you suspect nothing the entire time and the entire mood changed once the same dramatic thing happened. Everyone went from composure to chaos in no time. I found it interesting how watching the same scene with different background music and sounds can completely change the scene. Audio is extremely important. All of the elements come together to make a scene.I read “The Ambience of Film Noir- Soundscapes, Design and Mood” by Helen Hanson. Concepts of noir are interwoven into audio storytelling. These concepts make up the structure of a scene of segment. Audio makes the scene dramatic or not. Audio is used to convey a point or many points. Audio has developed and changed over the years, but it is only progressing as technology progresses. Audio still has the same purpose. I really enjoyed reading this piece because it gave me a deeper insight on audio.

I listened to ds106 radio on Thursday evening and participated in a live “tweet-along” with my fellow ds106ers and professors. I really liked being interactive while listening to the ds106 radio. My favorite story was the moon story. There were so many sound effects which made it seem like I was actually there. I think that it was really cool to be able to see what my fellow ds106ers were thinking. I also really loved all of the bumpers. They were all unique and creative.

Here are a few of my tweets from the night, but I included more in my post:

This week, we were assigned to brainstorm ideas for group radio shows happening in the future. I thought of a few things and put them in a blog post.

I completed the “Over-Dramatic Reading” assignment which was super fun! I was nervous that I would cough while recording, but it went smoothly. I recorded a dramatic reading of Sam Smith’s song Stay With Me.

The Daily Creates:

The daily create assignment for 2-3-15 was to make a picture with the words “I’m sorry” on it. I was feeling super sassy, so I chose to say “sorry not sorry”.

I'm Sorry

The daily create assignment for 2-4-15 was to caption what the puppy was thinking. This is the puppy

B8jLyTFCEAABGWQ

Well this puppy is cute, but I think that my puppy is the cutest, so I broke the rules and decided to caption my cute puppy because I think that looking at my puppy screams “cute puppy alert”, but I am biased haha

Here is my puppy

CUTEST puppy alert

I don’t know about you, but I think she’s just the absolute cutest!
