Shirley’s Story

For one of my assignments this week, I chose to do the assignment, This is my story, that was submitted by Seong Cho.

The assignment is to, “Tell a short story using flashcard and record yourself. It can be something funny, sad, or just even express how your day was.” This assignment is worth 3 points.

I chose to do this assignment so that you all could learn a bit more about Mayfield’s. I don’t know why the words aren’t flipped, technical difficulties. Once I recorded it, I uploaded it to vimeo. Enjoy!

Oh word!

For one of my assignments this week, I chose to do the assignment, A word…a picture…a story, that was submitted by Kierra Morris.

The assignment is to, “Chose up to 5-10 words..just randomly pick them don’t over think it just chose these words out of the blue. Then do a Google image search on these images and chose one of the first visible photos for the word..after you have chosen your words and your images put them together in video form and tell a story..include a sentence with each image to help guide your story or try and tell it without the sentences.” This assignment is worth 3 points.

Here are the ten random words I came up with:

  1. Dress
  2. Sparkle
  3. Marble
  4. Coffee
  5. Blanket
  6. Piglets
  7. Sun
  8. Mirror
  9. Curls
  10. Book

I went on google and searched for images for all of the words. I saved them all to a folder on my desktop and then imported them into iMovie. I created a movie and then uploaded it to Vimeo! Enjoy :)

Here is the story:

Piglets wear dresses that sparkle in the sun. They walk on floors of marble and sloppily drink their coffee. At night, they snuggle under blankets. In the morning, they look in the mirror and admire the curls of their tails and then snuggle up with a good book!

The Final Phase

I can’t believe we are already starting the final unit of ds106. This semester has been a tough one, but it has flown by just like all the other semesters. I chose to work in a small group for the final until. I chose to work with a few of amazing gals who I worked with for our radio show, Tiffany Yowell, Erin Clark, and Megan Rosengrant. I am very excited to work with these creative ladies!

Week Nine Summary

This week we started video which honestly scares me more than audio does. As time goes on in s106, I am jumping more and more outside of my comfort zone. I am enjoying it, but it also scares me.

The Noir Buzz:

After my show aired on ds106 radio on Tuesday night, I was lucky enough to be able to listen to Vixen’s Ventures. I wish that I didn’t have to work so much so I would have been able to tune into ds106 radio a lot more, but unfortunately I had a busy work schedule this week. Luckily I was able to tune in on Tuesday night after my night class! It still amazes me how much talent and creativity my fellow ds106ers have! Keep up the great work y’all!

I was lucky enough to tune into Vixen’s Ventures and I am so glad I did!

Finally…Get A Clue!:

First off I want to thank my awesome group members! These gals are awesome and I am so proud of what we put together without even meeting, well Erin and I met, but other than that we never met as a group. I am SO proud of y’all. I think we did an awesome job! Listening to our show live was really cool! I was overwhelmed by all of the nice comments on twitter by our fellow ds106ers and professors. I was definitely humbled by the professors commentary when Erin went on Skype after our show aired. When I listened to our show for the first time I was like WOW this is awesome, but hearing it live was even better! Such a cool experience!

Assignments:

This week we were assigned to read Roger Ebert’s “How to Read a Movie” as well as watch three videos of our choosing (from a list). I chose to watch The Shining-ZoomsCamera Angle and Techniques, and Examples of Editing Techniques. Click here to check out the rest of my post!

For one of my assignments this week I chose to do the assignment, Special Person Montage, that was submitted by Travis Peed.

The assignment is to, ” to decide on who is special to you. It could be a relative, sibling, parent, friend, mentor, celebrity, or anyone. Then you are to make a video of images or video clips of them showing all the different things that they do that makes them special to you. Add music, animation, transition, anything to make the video. In your write-up be sure to explain why the person is special to you.” This assignment is worth 5 points.

I chose to do this assignment because I love honoring the special people in my life and it looked fun. It was a lot of fun! I went and searched through photos and then made them into a video using animato. Once I was done, I uploaded it to vimeo.

I chose my mother because she is not only my mother, but she is my best friend. She means so much to me and I am so thankful to have her. She is an incredible woman who I look up to and learn from each and everyday. My mom is so special to me. She is always there for me as well as so many other people. She puts everyone else before her and it truly makes me smile. She is an amazing, amazing woman.

This week I chose to do the assignment, Character Description, that was submitted by Katie Barnes.

The assignment is to,”Create a short about a minute thirty to two minute video describing a character.” This assignment is worth 4 points.

I chose to do this assignment because at this point I am straight up obsessed with my character dossier Shirley Mayfield. I thought that I would enjoy doing this assignment and I did! I had a difficult time with this assignment, but I think I am happy with the overall outcome. I uploaded it to vimeo!

The Daily Creates:

The daily create assignment for 3-19-2105 was to take a photograph with an artistic blur.

I put lots of pictures of my mom and I together in here, but I also included some of my mom with other people or by herself which reflects other things that she likes to do such as my parents incredible cake business. Their cakes are phenomenal! My mom is also a nanny and she absolutely loves kids. The beach is my mom’s absolute favorite! She is such a happy and wonderful person and I am so lucky she is my mom.

I thought that the group did an amazing job! The show was a little bit difficult for me to follow, but by the end I got it! It really was an awesome show with great music and incredible sound effects. Everything (the editing) was so smooth! I also really liked their commercials. Very creative! I am so impressed with the creativity of my fellow ds106ers. Keep doing’ you y’all, keep doing’ you!

The Daily Create Assignment for Wednesday 2-25-2015 was to Select 5 emojis and use them as a prompt for a unique story. Screenshot your emojis and add link to your story below. If you are on Twitter then you can emojinate in one click!

I used the emojinate website to create an emoji story. The website randomly selected emojis for me and they were perfect.

Introducing Audio into my Life

I think that it’s all about the audio when it comes to storytelling. The way a story is told is super important. If no emotions are conveyed then a story is just a story. If effects and change in sounds and voices are made then your story comes to life. I think that storytelling is super important and it is so important to have emotion when telling stories. Since I will be a teacher one day, I find it extremely important to make stories come to life for students. The way a story is told can change the story completely. Sounds greatly impact the mood or setting of a story. Sound effects make someone feel like they are actually there.

I will definitely continue to utilize the Audio Resource page throughout the semester because there are some really helpful tips and I learned a lot from this page!

I watched Touch of Evil Opening Shot and Orson Welles- Touch of Evil (1958) opening. When I watched Touch of Evil Opening Shot, the music and sounds were very intense, but the mood was very light because the music was very upbeat. The whole video was going smoothly and everyone was happy until the last five seconds when something really dramatic happened. It was very much so a touch of evil. After watching Orson Welles- Touch of Evil (1958) opening I realized how much sound effects and audio change something. The music was so upbeat that you suspect nothing the entire time and the entire mood changed once the same dramatic thing happened. Everyone went from composure to chaos in no time. I found it interesting how watching the same scene with different background music and sounds can completely change the scene. Audio is extremely important. All of the elements come together to make a scene.

I read “The Ambience of Film Noir- Soundscapes, Design and Mood” by Helen Hanson.

Screen Shot 2015-02-08 at 6.42.05 PM

The above except was taken directly from the article. I loved the way that ambience was explained. I think that audio is all about the ambience. It is what sets up the segment or scene. It is what makes the segment or scene real. Concepts of noir are interwoven into audio storytelling. These concepts make up the structure of a scene of segment. Audio makes the scene dramatic or not. Audio is used to convey a point or many points. Audio has developed and changed over the years, but it is only progressing as technology progresses. Audio still has the same purpose. I really enjoyed reading this piece because it gave me a deeper insight on audio.

I listened to ds106 radio on Thursday evening and participated in a live “tweet-along” with my fellow ds106ers and professors. I really liked being interactive while listening to the ds106 radio. My favorite story was the moon story. There were so many sound effects which made it seem like I was actually there. I think that it was really cool to be able to see what my fellow ds106ers were thinking. I also really loved all of the bumpers. They were all unique and creative.

I retweeted Chelsea’s tweet because I felt the same way! I think that it was a great experience and I hope we get the chance to do this again soon!

Week Three Summary

This week has been EXTREMELY busy! I am so glad that I was able to get all of my work done. It was a struggle, but #ds106 is #4life, right?

After watching the weekly video, I decided to start organizing my blog website. I created categories for each of the assignments. I also created some sub-categories under assignments. Then, I went back and added all of my posts to the proper categories. Once I completed that, I added all of my categories to my menu. I did this by going to appearance -> Menus -> add categories. Once that was done I updated the menu to my site. I feel much better now! Everything has a place and it will be a lot easier to find posts that way!

Assignments:

I absolutely LOVE photography. I am the annoying friend who always wants to stop for a picture. My friends are just used to it by now. In high school, I took four years of photography and absolutely loved it. Plus I had an incredible teacher, so that definitely made the experience even more enjoyable. I also love traveling, so whenever I travel my eye is behind the lens of my Nikon D3100 also known as my baby. I treat my camera like it’s royalty. My camera goes on every trip with me. I mainly use my iPhone when I am out and about on a daily basis. I am guilty of taking “too many” photos. Haha! I am also one of those who has a hard time deleting things. I take pictures of everything. I don’t have one specific thing or a specific category. I am by no means a professional photographer. I don’t aspire to be, I take pictures simply because I love taking pictures. I included a few of my pictures in my post:

Israel 2011

Israel 2012

I learned a lot by reviewing the resources that were given to us this week! There is always room for learning and I love to explore and discover other people’s work. I elaborate on all of the resources in my post.

I watched Killer’s Kiss (1955) and Chinatown (1974) for the cinematography assignment this week. I definitely enjoyed Chinatown more than I enjoyed Killer’s Kiss. I loved being able to see the elements of noir in both films. I really liked how I was able to see how these elements are tied together since they were films. I included three still captures from the movies in my post which I reviewed as well.

Completing the noir photo safari was not the easiest thing for me this week. I definitely could have done a lot better, but I enjoyed getting to feel noir more. I am really starting to like noir. It is definitely much easier to identify. I captured multiple things, see my post to check them out.

Visual Assignments:

I absolutely loved picking out the visual assignments this week! I am a visual learner so being able to produce something visual is good for my mind.

I completed the “What’s in your bag” assignment for my character, Shirley Mayfield.IMG_5332

I also completed the “Colorize It” assignment for Shirley Mayfield.

Unknown-1

I completed the “9 Lives” assignment which was super fun and I loved seeing a “timeline” of my life.9LivesLastly, I completed the “Emojis IRL” assignment because I love emojis! I was able to create a story with three emojis! “Remember to wear sunscreen!”

emojis irl joined final

The Daily Creates:

The daily create assignment for 1-26-2015 was to create a droodle at a meeting or elsewhere.

Droodle

The daily create assignment for 1-28-15 was to make your own 2048 game.  I decided to make 2048: Lilly Pulitzer edition because I wanted to see bright colors. All of the Lilly Pulitzer prints bring a smile to my face and brighten my day! Want to play?

2048: Lilly Pulitzer Edition

For some reason my daily create didn’t show up on the daily create page, but I tagged everything correctly.

The daily create assignment for 2-1-2015 was to make your own drawing without lifting your pencil off of your paper. I decided to draw the ocean because I absolutely love summer and I am SO sick of this weather, so I thought that may brighten my day a bit. I do have to say, it was a lot harder than I thought though.
